Most people probably take for granted what a rod and reel actually does. The rod absorbs the shock and creates resistance. The drags on the reel create resistance as well. In combination, the rod and reel perform a big chunk of the actual fighting of a fish. When you handline a fish, you remove these aids in subduing the fish that typically gives an angler the advantage. It literally is mano a mano. Angler vs. fish.
When said fish is a massive goliath grouper, it’s a battle that favors the fish. It’s a feat most people wouldn’t even try. This angler did. See who won.
